  • How To Safely Store (+ Burn) Shed Hair?

I collect shed hair from our drains, brushes and combs. We have a designated container that we put all the hair in. When it gets full, I use matches or a lighter to ignite the hair. If you are considering burning your shed hair, always practice fire safety by fire-proofing the space, using a fire-retardant container and steering clear from any flammables. Can You Burn Wet Hair? No. It has to be super dry to catch fire. And dry hair burns really fast. If your shed hair is wet (like hair from your drains) let it air dry before burning. Can You Burn Cut Hair? Hair that has been cut (for example after a big chop or post locs) can be more difficult to burn. Hair that naturally sheds from the scalp is more sparse and is probably a smaller quantity, than the amount of hair you may cut. Shed hair is also at a different point in its life cycle than freshly cut strands. So when hair is prematurely cut, it may take a little more time to ignite. And you may need a slightly larger and stronger fire, like an outdoor pit to burn it. But don't take this phenomenon for granted. Witnessing the strength of your tiny strands (against the almighty air and fire) should make you proud. Why Is My Hair Not Burning? This can happen if you pack the hair too tight in the jar, cup or ash tray. Make sure there is adequate air flow. You can aerate the hair by lightly fluffing it up, before you burn it. It's also important that the container you use has a wide mouth (again for air flow). If you've given your hair all the wind action it needs and it's still not burning, it could be the hair's texture and/or density. I've noticed thicker, tightly coiled hair burns differently than thinner, looser curls. If hair burning isn't working for you, according to my great-grandmother's story, you can also flush it. I'm not sure how flushing protects the hair from birds, especially since the hair eventually ends up on land, but I'm simply sharing what I was told. How Long Does The Hair Take To Burn? It depends on how much shed hair you have. A handful of strands takes a few seconds. If you collect a bunch of hair and burn it all at once, this may take longer. How Do You Douse The Fire? No need to put the fire out. Ash smothers fire. So once you ignite the hair, the fire will fizzle out by itself. In fact, that was my favorite part as a child. Watching my mom roll my shed hair into a fluffy ball. She'd put that soft ball in her ash tray. Then light it and I'd watch it magically fizzle away. Even though hair burning is self-consuming, NEVER leave any fire unattended. Wait until you see no sign of flames. You can also stir and crush the ashes to make sure there are no signs of spark. What Do You Do With The Ashes? You can keep them, bury them, scatter them, or flush them. Keeping your burned hair can be similar to keeping a diary or journal. The ashes are basically your thoughts and energy from a past time, which you may want to hold on to. You can also bury or scatter your ashes. Consider choosing a site that has a special meaning for you. And then create a ritual around releasing your ashes back to Mother Nature. Lastly, if you don't have access to an outdoor space, you can always flush your burned hair. Check your local water and sewer website for what not to flush. Some cities and towns may discourage flushing hair balls in their natural state, because they do not break down in water. The hair may get stuck or clog pipes. Which is why burning before you flush can be a better option. How Do You Get Rid Of The Smell? The smell doesn't bother me, in fact it's quite nostalgic. But I can totally understand why others dislike it. If you are not a fan, burn the hair outside in the direction of the wind. That way the scent isn't in your home, on you, or your clothes. You can also try an ashtray with a lid, to quell lingering smoke. Do you use fire in your hair routine? What other hair traditions do you have in your family? • Is Hair Burning In The Bible?

We found one story, thanks to a YouTube comment. After posting our hair burning video, a viewer offered a Christian perspective. She wrote... "The significance of burning hair is from one taking the Nazarite vow in Numbers 6. Once the vow has been completed, the Nazarite is to shave the hair off and burn it. Not superstition but spiritually significant to God as in story of Samson and Delilah. Apostle Paul also shaved and burned his hair upon completion of his vow in Acts 18. Although not taking a vow, my Auntie always burned her hair. I continue to do this practice as the Philistines obviously stole Samson's strength when they cut his hair which was sacred to God. Your hair is sacred to God but it's also desired by your enemy satan to do you harm. Therefore, continue to burn your hair ladies. Blessings" -kbleu2 I'm super grateful for kbleu2's comment, because she helped me dig deeper into hair's holiness. So I looked up the scriptures she mentioned. Here are the 3 references to hair and hair burning in the bible. Numbers 6:5 (NIV), "During the entire period of their Nazarite vow, no razor may be used on their head. They must be holy until the period of their dedication to the Lord is over; they must let their hair grow long." Numbers 6:7c (NIV) reads, "because the symbol of their dedication to God is on their head." Numbers 6:18 (NIV) "Then at the entrance to the tent of meeting, the Nazarite must shave off the hair that symbolizes their dedication. They are to take the hair and put it in the fire that is under the sacrifice of the fellowship offering." Kbleu2 also referenced Judges 16:17, which is the story of Samson and Delilah. Within the story Delilah learns that Samson's strength is in his hair -- which he had never cut. Lastly, Acts 18, which is another biblical story referencing hair cutting. I'm not a Bible scholar, but the theme amongst these biblical scriptures seems to be that the hair is powerful, holds secrets to our strength and is strongly connected to the Divine. What themes do you see in the scriptures above? Have you discovered hair burning in other places in the Bible? Do you think hair burning is a practice that is still spiritually relevant today? • How To Prepare For Your Baby’s Hair?

Preparing for your baby's hair can be super exciting!! In fact, there are over 100,000 searches a day about baby hair care tips on Google (this number does not include YouTube, other search engines, or social media. Over our blogging years, we've learned that parents want to... start planning for baby's texture want product recommendations want style suggestions need help dealing with social pressures from partners, family, or others who expect baby's hair to look a certain way Because baby's hair care requires so much time, skill, and attention, some moms may choose to outsource this job to a hair professional, family, or friend. This can be especially true for moms who have completely different hair textures and do not know where to start. Or it could be true for moms who outsource their own hair care. Other moms may choose to take this time to learn to do their baby's hair themselves. In our home, I shared the same hair texture as our daughter, but because I always straightened my hair, I did not know how to care for hers as it grew out of her scalp. This led to me keeping her hair (and mine) super short for the first few years of her life, so that I could learn both of our textures together. I eventually figured out that developing a hair routine that we both absolutely loved was most important. But that process took time. If you're wondering how long? It was at least five years. During that time we discovered allergies to certain hair products, and I unfortunately weighed down our baby's curls by using super heavy creams. When our second daughter came, I thought I had enough hands-on hair knowledge to have a successful routine with her. But she had a completely different texture as well as different hair needs. For example, her scalp was way more sensitive and couldn’t handle certain styles. She also wasn't a fan of having water poured over her head. There’s so much more I could share, but to get straight to the point I’m not quite sure you can fully prepare for a child’s hair. There are so many nuances such as if your child will even allow you to try all of the styles you've imagined. Truly personalized hair care requires a lifelong learning approach. Meaning -- the hair care needs of your child(ren) will change as their hair grows. I think it's super important to honor this process, because it strengthens your patience, and clarifies your hair goals. Whatever path you choose, my hope is that you enjoy every step of the way. Until next time... Love The Journey,

  • 8 Famous Animated Puffs (+ How To Mimic The Looks)

Animators are getting really good at replicating afro-textured hair digitally. Below is a roundup of some of the most famous animated puffs. 1. Dee (Dee and Friends in Oz) Netflix Jr on YouTube We're starting this list with Dee, simply because bubble braids would not be as adorable if it weren't for how puffy they get. Dee has jet black hair and her bubbles are separated with four colorful hair ties. She uses a thick cornrow as a half-braided crown tucked in front. We're super impressed with Dee's textured waves and hair movement. Mimic The Look: 2. Ada Twist (Ada Twist Scientist) Netflix on Youtube We're fascinated with how much energy the digital artists gave to Ada's puffs. The placing of her coils, the attention to her texture, the bounce and depth through shading makes her crown look like a true work of art. Ada's puffs stand high on her head in two round balls that look incredibly soft. We also love that the baby hairs are visible (not laid). And the pleasing pop of color, using smooth yellow bobbles. Mimic The Look: 3. Esme (Esme & Roy) Esme & Roy on YouTube Wide-eyed Esme is super adorable in her sleek brown puff. It's centered on the top of her head with a turquoise hair tie that has yellow bobbles. As a 2D character, the illustrators demonstrated her curls as overlapping squiggles going in different directions. Mimic The Look: 4. Gabrielle (Nature Explorers! With Elmo, Gabrielle, and Tango) Sesame Street Workshop Gabrielle has two dark brown puffs in her animation series with Elmo and Tango. When outdoors she wears a blue visor, while Elmo wears a matching bucket hat. Mimic The Look: 5. Zooli (Bubble Guppies) Bubble Guppies on Youtube Zooli is the cutest little mergirl with curly hair that's purple (her favorite color). She wears it in a high puff using a blue band. The look is completed with a blue sea shell. Zooli has also worn a flower crown, a hat, and hair wreath. No matter the head gear, her signature puff is often front and center. Mimic The Look: 6. Lunella (Moon Girl) Disney Channel on YouTube It's pretty cool to be able to add afro puffs (in comic book style) to our list. Lunella's hair intentionally takes up space and their cloud-like appearance is very unique (like her)! In this version of Moon Girl we noticed that Lunella has two puffs with a curly bang, when she is herself. But when she transforms to Moon Girl -- she has one. Mimic The Look: 7. Kendall (Wellie Wishers) American Girl on YouTube We're obsessed with Kendall's coily puffs. She has two -- and they're separated by a middle part. Her go-to accessory is a pink headband with a bow and flowery print. It sits comfortably behind her short and curly bangs. Mimic The Look: 8. Orange Blossom (Strawberry Shortcake) WildBrain Kids on YouTube Orange Blossom's puffs are as big as her personality. She wears a squiggly part down the middle of her beautiful orange head of hair. She completes the adorable look with a peek-a-boo curl that hangs between her brows. We're impressed with how the animators celebrate hair culture by making sure her puffs are always in full view. For example, she's worn a headband, a helmet, a pony cap, and even a puff-friendly winter hat with ear flaps. Her head gear always matches her outfit and has the signature orange theme. Even her bonnet was blue with orange slices (her favorite fruit). Mimic The Look: We link to products to help with character-inspired looks. • Exploring the Message Behind Barbie's "Legacy" Lyrics

Barbie "Brooklyn" Roberts released her first music video of the year -- and it's called "Legacy." In good ol' Barbie fashion the video is bright, colorful, and highlights moments from Brooklyn's life. We liked the message behind the 2-minute song, which is to honor the ones who came before us by gifting the world with our very best. Barbie's tribute compliments the brand's goal to encourage all girls that "they can be anything." Released on YouTube on February 1, 2024, the video received over 1.3 million views, and close to 900 likes by the end of the month. You can watch the video and read the lyrics below: "I come from a rich, rich history My roots are strong Yeah they run deep I feel it in the rhythm with my feet Ba Ba Bump Ba Ba Bump Bump Baa Every generation's story I'm not the branch, in my family tree I hear it in the melodies I sing La la la la la Passed down from heart to heart We all play a little part *and I'll do my best to play along Cuz I'm building my my my legacy I get to make my own history L-E-G-A-C-Y Legacy Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh It's my legacy I'm building my my my legacy I get to make my own history L-E-G-A-C-Y Legacy Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh It's my legacy It's my turn to reach for the stars And I feel them cheering me on They're with me keeping me strong Ra Ra Ra Ra Ra Passed down from heart to heart We all play a little part *and I'll do my best to play along Cuz I'm building my my my legacy I get to make my own history L-E-G-A-C-Y Legacy Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh It's my legacy *Oh I remember the stars I'm giving them credit I'm so thankful for all they did Now it's my time, I'm ready, I'm ready *[...] Oh Oh Cuz I'm building my my legacy I get to make my own history L-E-G-A-C-Y Legacy Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh It's my legacy" *Unclear lyrics Did You Know? Screenshot of "Legacy" playing on iphone As of the writing of this post, "Legacy" is Barbie's second most popular song on Amazon music. You can check it out here. It's beat by a 2014 song called "Mermaid Party." For reference Barbie released 10 singles in 2023, and 7 in 2022. What Legacy is Barbie Trying To Leave? Barbie has been a well-renowned international brand for decades. We appreciate how strategic and purposeful the company is when it comes to sharing its ideas with the world. And this creativity and playfulness is what fosters the love for the Barbie brand. A big part of her legacy is embracing a modern multi-media approach. For example, in addition to selling the "Legacy" single on all streaming platforms (including Amazon and Apple Music), Mattel (Barbie's parent company) also partnered with a well-known YouTuber with 3.3 million subscribers. Gracie's Corner is a kid-friendly YouTube channel that created a reaction video starring herself, her little sister, mom and dad dancing to the song. It was released a day later on February 2, 2024 and received over a million views by the end of the month. Screenshot of Gracie from Gracie's Corner on YouTube dancing to "Legacy" On February 17, 2023, Barbie also released an MTV-styled World Premiere on her Instagram. It features a Barbie doll wearing pink extensions, while dancing beside two backup dancers. After the snippet, Barbie is interviewed by Ken. He asks her to tell the audience about her hopes for the song. This time you'll see a Poetic Justice-inspired Barbie with hoop earrings and a nose ring deliver the response. We're super impressed with how much detail went into creating unique content for every platform the song was released on. The Barbie team used animation, a reaction video, stop motion, wardrobe changes, gorgeous art, and fun to launch a super catchy song with intentional lyrics. What was your reaction to Barbie's new song? What legacy (if any) has it inspired you to leave? Until next time... Love The Journey,

  • 5 Famous Animated Braids (+ How To Mimic The Looks)

From pigtails to microbraids, we describe the unforgettable details behind five famous animated braids. 1. Doc (Doc McStuffins) Disney Junior on YouTube Doc McStuffins rocks two adorable pigtails that stick up in the air. She seals her braids with tiny pink elastics that don't seem to weigh down the style. Her purple headband sits a few inches back from her forehead. It sparkles and has an iconic pink flower towards the right. Doc's signature style isn't complete without her two quarter parts -- one in the front and the other in the back. Mimic The Look: Purple Headband Pink Elastics 2. Susie Carmichael (Rugrats) Nickolodeon & Paramount Plus on YouTube When Susie was first designed, her three braids were held together by red hair ties with red flower barrettes on the end. In 2021, all of the Rugrats characters got a reboot. Now Susie's chunky braids are decorated with gold bobbles. A look that's totally reminiscent of the 90s. The minimalistic style was probably popular, because it's super quick and doesn't require too many hairdressing skills. Mimic The Look: Gold Bobbles Red Barrettes 3. Barbie "Brooklyn" Roberts (Barbie) Barbie on YouTube We are not surprised that this fashionista frequently switches up her look. Barbie is known for her iconic mini-braids. Throughout the episodes you'll notice they are styled a few different ways -- from a top knot, to half-up half-down, and fully out. Barbie even had an episode with multi-colored extensions. Although she recently swapped out her braids for a wavy sew-in, we noticed Barbie often finishes all of her looks with slicked down edges. Mimic The Look: Baby Hair Edge Brush Gel 4. Asha (Wish) Walt Disney Animation Studios on YouTube The character designers at Disney did a fabulous job making simple braids look absolutely gorgeous!! Asha's style starts with a side part. She has seven cornrows braided straight back on the left, stopping around the top of her ears. The rest of her hair is medium-to-small sized box braids that swoop to the right and hang around her hips. Mimic The Look: Rat-tail comb (for super neat parts) 5. Andrea (Lego Friends) LEGO on YouTube Andrea has dark brown waist-length hair. She's another girl who swears by the side part and hair swooped to the right. Her braids are pretty thick with ends that taper. To keep her long hair out of her face, she forms an overhand knot with two braids. This type of knot replaces a hair tie and is easy to take out. The same musical note Andrea wears on her shirt, matches the pink musical barrette on her side sweep. There are a few multi-colored beads strategically placed towards the ends which provide an adorable pop of color. As an entertainer, Andrea's constantly singing and dancing. And the animators do such an excellent job with her hair's movement. Mimic The Look: Colorful barrettes Colorful beads Please know we link to products to help with character-inspired looks. • Why Mastering The Afro is Important (For Kids)?

The fro is the first style a child can proudly do on their own. Braiding, twisting, or even using a hair tie requires fine motor skills that can take years to master. The main reasons we think afros are important for children to master are… They help children to get to know their own texture They reveal the child’s natural beauty (no one else has a fro like them) They’re super freeing (especially for children with sensitive scalps) Are Afros Kid-Friendly? Yes! Many kids prefer wearing their hair out versus lengthy hair routines. The maintenance, beauty standards, and social pressures of today can make it difficult for parents to honor their children’s requests. What’s the Hardest Part About Maintaining an Afro? Detangling! Lint, sand, and other small goodies love to get caught in children’s hair. It can be even more challenging if your little one loves using their hair (instead of their napkin) to wipe their hands. This means, they may rub food, and their dirty hands against their pillow soft curls - making their hair the ultimate collector of tiny particles that probably shouldn’t be there. The Solution... Many families will choose to keep the hair short. Short could mean right above the ears, just barely touching the shoulders, or any other length you decide. This makes maintenance easier and hair time happier in many homes. Don’t worry, as children age their hair can totally reach a healthy tail-bone length fairly quickly, because the child (and parent) have a solid foundation of knowing how to care of their unique head of hair. Is your little one obsessed with wearing their hair out? What solution have you found for your family? Until next time… Love The Journey,

  • 5 Fun Scratch Games (for Water Enthusiasts)

Screenshot of Froggy Valley by Gooodgis on Scratch Did you know you could recreate beach vibes, boat rides, and underwater quests on Scratch? We created a list of our favorites below... 1. Famish Fish Guide an adorable clown fish as it feeds on smaller fish near the ocean floor. The more fish you eat the bigger your clown fish will get. And the bigger your fish gets, the more meal options your little swimmer has. During the feast you must avoid eight different enemies including a puffer fish, a shark, a blue fish and even a littered aluminum can. There are four levels and three lives. Each level gets harder as the deep sea gets more crowded with predators. We're obsessed with the cute art style, as well as the clean coding on the backend. For example, there is only one sprite for the water bubbles, but they appear throughout the blue background in varying sizes. We also love the added touch of darkening the scene when the shark appears. Screenshot of Famished Fish by Griffpatch on Scratch Release Date: May 29, 2019 Scratcher: Griffpatch Mobile-Friendly: Yes Plays: 260,600+ (as of 2/16/24) Remixes: 1,150+ (as of 2/16/24) 2. Tappy Tadpole Ever want to become a tadpole? Say no more!! This game allows you to hop from one lily pad to the next. Every successful leap is worth five points. A cool hack we noticed is being able to skip lily flowers and pads. As long as you connect with one of the aquatic plants, you're safe and on the path to beating the game's highest score. The obstacles? Ripples, splashes, and of course the green inlands at the side of the pond. Tappy Tadpole is all about timing, aiming, and launching. We're super impressed with the backend coding that makes the pond's movement look all too real. We also noticed the elongated tongue took a whopping 61 sprites to animate. Screenshot of Tappy Tadpole by kevin_eleven_1234 on Scratch Release Date: September 25, 2017 Scratcher: kevin_eleven_1234 Mobile-Friendly: Yes Plays: 50,000+ (as of 2/16/24) Remixes: 100+ (as of 2/16/24) 3. Orblo: Fishing Frenzy! Next up... a fishing game that's full of surprises. We love how much it resembles real-life fishing from casting the line and waiting for the pole to tug. When the time is right, the player must repeatedly tap the space bar (or phone) to garner enough strength to reel in the prize. There are over 40 uniquely-named creatures to collect that range from common, uncommon, and rare. They include a box jellyfish, a merry fishmas, a sea snek, a freshwater froog, and more. You can also catch random objects such as a strange rock and an old boot. Everything looks beautifully hand-drawn and written with impeccable detail. If you think the game ends there, think again! This Scratcher also created a shop with some neat power-ups. For example, with enough FishPoints you can add more pull to your line, increase your chance of catching luckier fish, decrease your wait time, or even double your FishPoints. You can easily end up playing this game for an hour or more, so we encourage you to give it a try! Screenshot of Orblo: Fishing Frenzy! by OrbleoOfficial on Scratch Release Date: August 8, 2023 Scratcher: OrbleoOfficial Mobile-Friendly: Yes Plays: 151,000+ (as of 2/16/24) Remixes: 440+ (as of 2/16/24) 4. Froggy Volley Looking for some friendly competition? Froggy Volley is a pretty cool two-player game set on a sunny beach. Using the WASD and arrow keys, players try to keep the volley ball in the air before it lands in the sand. The game art is adorable, the music and sound effects are subtle, the motion physics are impressive, and we also appreciate the intentional animations. Each frog has a "hit" face with tightly-closed eyes; the characters and volley ball have dynamic shadows that move and scale; and there are waves crashing the sandy shore in the background. Screenshot of Froggy Volley by Gooodgis on Scratch Release Date: September 20, 2023 Scratcher: Gooodgis Mobile-Friendly: Unknown Plays: 193,000+ (as of 2/16/24) Remixes: 1,000+ (as of 2/16/24) 5. Fish Catch Finally, Fish Catch is a collaboration between three Scratchers with some pretty cool features. It set's on a fishing boat in the middle of a rough sea. There are 7 different fish to catch including a light bulb fish, a shark, and a sting ray. The game play requires a ton of coordination, as you have to steer the ship with the WASD keys, drag the fish to the boat, and avoid falling barrel bombs. The game also features a shop with five different boats to choose from. In the game description, the team outlined the amount of work that went into the project, which included ... 1,324 blocks of code 128 assets 123 lists 44 variables 15 sprites, and 7 lists Screenshot of Fish Catch by yoshihome on Scratch Release Date: October 9, 2023 Scratcher: yoshihome, PhilHub, and AzimuthPulse Mobile-Friendly: Unknown Plays: 2,400+ (as of 2/16/24) That's it for our list! • What Is Stretched Hair?

Stretched hair is hair that has been elongated. Curly and coily hair naturally shrink, so stretching the hair can make styling faster or help your little one achieve their desired look. For example, stretching an afro can make a bigger fro. Is It Better To Stretch Wet Or Dry Hair? Wet (or damp)! Here’s why… Have you noticed hair immediately after a shower appears longer? That’s because the detangling process along with the weight of water help the hair to hang. To prevent the shrinkage that occurs during the air-drying process, you can use your preferred stretching method. Stretching the hair will help it dry at its longer (versus shrunken) state. How To Stretch Hair? You can stretch the hair with or without heat. For example, blow drying the hair (with a brush or comb) naturally releases the curl/coil and will make the hair appear longer. For those that prefer heatless methods - braids, twists, buns, bantu knots, banding, clipping, and pineapples can also stretch the hair. These styles will temporarily mold the hair into a new shape and/or pattern. You just have to make sure the style completely dries before undoing it. This means letting the hair fully air-dry after a couple of hours or days. If the hair is wet or slightly damp, it may attempt to revert to its natural curl pattern. Different methods will achieve different results. For example, a braid out, will result in crimped hair, twist out wavy hair, bantu knots will create spirals, and the blow out leaves a stretched puff. Some are obsessed with these different looks exactly the way they are, but you can take the stretched hair to another level by dry brushing with a detangling brush. Dry brushing is simply brushing the twist out or braid out. This brushing will again remove the wave, spiral, or curl to lengthen the hair even more. You’re essentially stretching the hair in multiple stages so that the stretching process is gentle on the scalp and curls. Is Stretching Hair Painful? It shouldn't be. But it depends on the child, their scalp sensitivities, and your ability to be gentle. In our home, we love bantu knots because it's such a cute style that's quick and isn't tight. How Long Is Stretched Hair? It depends on how much shrinkage your little one has. If their hair shrinks 60% or 80% expect double the length or more. If the hair only shrinks 20%, expect a slight elongation. Does Stretching Damage The Natural Curl? Using too much heat when blow drying can alter the curl over time. It can fry the hair if too hot or cause it to lose its curl. Similarly banding or braiding too tight can injure the scalp. The blessing is there are so many methods to try. If you notice any discomfort from your child, try something else. A healthy stretching routine will lead to curls and coils that happily bounce back after a good wash. Why Stretch The Hair Before Braiding? Stretching the hair before braiding loosens or removes the natural curl pattern. The result is a tighter and smoother braid that doesn’t have any random curls or waves popping out of it. In other words, stretched hair can create a more predictable and uniformed braid. Plus braiding on stretched hair can reduce the amount of times your fingers get tangled or caught in a curl. Please know that both can achieve absolutely beautiful results, it just depends on the desired look you are going for. What’s The Difference Between Stretched Hair and Straight Hair? Straight hair may not hold a natural style. For example, the straight ends may just unravel. Stretched hair is still textured. This trait makes it naturally better at holding braids, twists, and bantu knots without needing assistance from accessories like hair ties, rubber bands, or bobbie pins. In summary, stretched hair is used to achieve ...
