When Do Spray Decks and Splash Pads Open?
State-run spray decks (including Artesani, Cass, Neponset, and Olsen) tend to open in late May. City-run splash pads are typically open mid-June to mid-September.
What's the Difference Between A Spray Deck, Splash Pad, and Sprinklers?
All are fun and interactive ways for families to cool off in the summer. Locals usually use the word "sprinklers." The state calls the outdoor water features "sprays decks" and the city calls them "splash pads."
Do You Need Water Shoes?
You can, but in our experience most children are barefoot. Spray deck surfaces range from cement to a spongy cushion. They don't get slimy like indoor water spaces. However, some locations do have surfaces that get extremely hot and slippery, especially if there are extended periods of direct sun and no shade. So depending on which site you visit, water shoes can be a safe option.
