She Persisted: Ruby Bridges

Another inspiring story in the "She Persisted" series. You'll gain a deeper understanding of Ms. Ruby Bridges - the 6 year old who integrated Louisiana schools. You'll discover that she was a gifted child who was among only 4% of students who passed a standardized test. One that was specifically designed for her (and her peers) to fail, but she passed it anyway. You'll learn that her first day of school wasn't even in a classroom. Instead Ruby and her mother sat in the principal's office -- for the entire school day. Ruby also spent the first year alone with a super kind-hearted teacher, whom Ruby built a special bond with. After reading, we watched several youtube videos interviewing Mrs. Bridges and the work she is still doing today. A very quick read that may change your perspective on the many privileges we have today and encourage the history making decisions you are creating for your own family.

Did you know the Boston Public Library (BPL) has over 62,000 new children's books? We hope to save you time with our book suggestions. You can borrow physical (and digital) books using your library card. You can preview most (but not all) books on Amazon. Unfortunately, books available through ComCat do not have direct links -- so you will have to search for the exact title on their site. What is ComCat?
