Breastfeeding Timer (Plus Tracker)

Updated: Mar 15

Why use a breastfeeding tracker?

If a mom frequently nurses on one side, she may develop one breast that's noticeably larger than the other. A breastfeeding tracker can serve as a gentle reminder to nurse the baby on the other side.

Do you need to time breastfeeding sessions?

We don’t think so. On-demand nursing has incredible benefits, such as meeting babies needs as they arise. We built a timer simply to help moms get to know how long their baby feeds and how that may change over time. For example, a child that spends longer than their normal time on the breast may be an early sign that they are getting sick. You do not necessarily need a timer to notice these changes, but tracking them can help emphasize (and/or confirm) patterns.

Why did you include a breast diagram?

Witnessing how your breast changes can be fascinating. For example, after baby is born the areola typically gets larger and darker. Your milk can also change colors depending on what you eat. Our tracker can remind you to notice these changes.

What limitations does this tool have?

While we're incredibly proud of what we built, it'd be wrong to not admit its flaws. The timer stops if the screen is inactive. This means that if you visit another app or webpage, the timer pauses until you return. With nursing sessions lasting 20 minutes or more, leaving one page open may be difficult. Also, the emailed report doesn't include all fields. This means that if you include comments on your laps, and document the comfort of your latch -- it is not saved. Despite these shortcomings, we hope our tracker helps you better understand your feeding sessions. As new devs, we're still learning to code and hope to solve these issues in the near future. If you have any more tips or suggestions, please let us know here. Until then -- Happy Nursing!
