Boston Saves Calculator (+ Who Isn't Eligible?)

Updated: Aug 4

Boston Saves only serves Boston Public School students in grades K2 to 5. This means older children and students attending other educational options (like private schools or homeschool) aren't eligible.

If you're one of the Boston families who won't get the $50 seed investment -- and you're interested in saving for your little one -- we made a calculator for you to compare different options below.

What is Boston Saves?

Boston Saves is an initiative by the city to invest in children's future.

How much can a Boston Saves account earn?

According to our research, the max a Boston Saves account can earn is $615 (as of 2025). If the city continues to offer book and savings incentives (which total $40 per year, up to 6 years), the account could grow to over $800. This assumes that the child stays in Boston Public Schools from K2 to 5th grade, and there are no other large incentives (like the BHA/Boston Housing Authority $500 boost).

How can families (who aren't eligible for Boston Saves) earn $40 a year?

  • Review kids products on Amazon Live

  • Use Cash Back Cards to buy groceries

  • Keep around $2,000 in a CD (certificate deposit) or high-yield savings account

  • Buy kid-themed stocks that pay dividends

What are some limitations to the Boston Saves program?

  • The account doesn't earn interest.

  • Funds can only be used for higher learning or career training.

  • Funds are returned to the program if not used by time the child turns 27.

How does Boston Saves compare to Trump's Baby Bonus?

Trump's Baby Bonus starts with $1,000 and is geared towards newborns. You can learn more about the Trump account here.
