About American Legion Shopping Centers
American Legion Highway is home to two outdoor shopping centers.
The first set of stores is located around 650 American Legion. It has 30 destinations including a grocery store, clothing stores, restaurants, and over 450 free parking spots.
A mile up the road at 950 American Legion is a newer and smaller plaza with 15 destinations, including a laundromat, a pharmacy, and a gas station. This plaza can be accessed via American Legion Highway or Cummings Highway. Its free parking lot has around 540 spots.
While both locations have huge lots, parking tends to get harder and more congested over the weekends.
Main Attractions
Both shopping centers seem to be loved for one-stop discount and in-person shopping. One Google Reviewer wrote "This place has everything I need, from hair supplies, to car supplies and food and everything in between.¹" Two customers mention driving long distances, one from Connecticut² and another from Salem³ just for the meats at Clinton's Market, a butcher shop. Finally a TD bank customer shared that he appreciates the branch being closer to where he lives compared to the locations downtown⁴.
The biggest complaints are around customer service, out-dated infrastructure, and pot holes in the parking lot at the older shopping center.
About American Legion Highway
American Legion Highway, is often shortened to American Legion by locals. Despite having the word "highway," in its name, the road is embedded in four residential neighborhoods (Dorchester, Mattapan, Roslindale, and Hyde Park). American Legion spans a little over 2.5 miles, and speed limits are restricted to 30 miles per hour. There are two-lanes of car traffic on both sides of the dual carriageway, as well as a bike and bus lane.
