The idea that people who are the best in their fields dedicate an incredible amount of time and effort into mastering that skill, talent, or industry.

According to our research, the original promoters of the 10,000 hour theory describe the length of time as "almost impossible."

One researcher that stood out was Daniel Levitin, a polymath, writer, and cognitive psychologist, who explained that the "magic number of greatness" is 10,000 hours or 10 years.

We're not sure who came up with the 10,000 hour rule. Malcolm Gladwell mentions the theory in his 2008 book, "Outliers: The Story of Success." He dedicated the whole second chapter to the idea by naming it "The 10,000-Hour Rule."

In it Gladwell mentions multiple researchers exploring the theory of spending a significant amount of time before mastering a craft.

Oprah has mentioned 10,000 hours multiple times in interviews. She likes the idea of "there being 10,000 hours behind anybody who gets to be successful." Oprah says that the younger generations expect success to happen "like that" while snapping her fingers. Instead she believes that the process of making the the right moves and choices is incredibly important.

Mr Beast runs some of the world's most viewed YouTube channels. He believes the 10,000 hour rule should be increased to 30, 40, or 100,000 hours. His argument is that 10 hours a day for 3 years isn't enough. His obsession with YouTube content took 7 years before anyone noticed his videos.

Timbuktu (an ancient city in Mali, NorthWest Africa) used to be a well-known educational capital. During the 13th and 14th century it took 40 years to become a master. In the 21st century, you can buy an academic masters in 2 or 3 years.
