7 Books for Little Crowns

Maybe it's my personal obsession with black hair, but I love children's books that shed light on our styles and textures. Here are seven titles from our library that celebrate little crowns.

1. Bintou’s Braids

Written by Sylviane A. Diouf, a historian who celebrates the African Diaspora, this book is set in a West African village and follows a brave little girl with tuffs.

2. Happy to Be Nappy

I'm happy our girls can be introduced to Bell Hooks in their early years. While "nappy" can have a negative connotation, this board board is filled with positive descriptors.

3. I’m a Pretty Little Black Girl

Betty K. Bynum dedicated this cute story to her mom. We love the rhythm, pride and boldness in this book. Mia, the main character, starts her day talking to herself in the mirror. Throughout the book she celebrates the different complexions and hair styles of her friends.

4. Princess hair

Authored and illustrated by the amazing Sharee Miller, this book opens with "all princesses wear crowns." The fun illustrations show girls wearing locs, twists, kinks, wraps, puffs and more.

5. Shades of Black

Gifted to us by an elder, this book showcases blackness through different eye colors, skin colors and hair textures.

6. Emi’s Curly, Coily, Cotton Candy Hair

Between the scalp massage and compliments from dad - Tina Olajide makes wash day look so fun. The illustrations beautifully capture a mom bonding with her daughter over hair care. This self-published book is definitely one of our faves.

7. My Hair Grows Like a Tree

Tamika Phillip had the brilliant idea to connect natural hair to nature around us. This book is full of reflective questions and activities for it’s readers. Our girls are much younger than the intended audience (ages 7 to 12), but it’s still an important study guide.
