4 Ways I Damaged Our Daughter's Curly Hair

4 Ways I Damaged Our Daughter's Curly Hair | DommiesBlessed

She's only been on this planet for 6 years! How in the world did I manage to damage her hair?

Here's How...

1. No Sleep Protection

We tried bonnets, wave caps, scarves, satin pillowcases, even wearing pajama pants on the head at night. Our six year old just recently became comfortable with wearing something on her head, but it continues to fall off in the middle of the night and so she continues to wake up with dehydrated, matted, wiry hair.

2. No Curly Hair Experience

I've been doing hair ever since I can remember. I locked, weaved, flat-ironed, countless heads in high school and college including my own. Despite being the go-to hair person and having coily hair myself, I never learned how to maintain and care for curls. With our daughter I was experimenting with products, styles and techniques to figure out what worked for her texture.

3. Let Her Do Her Hair

I think she was around 1 or 2 when she wanted to get ready herself. Put her shoes on, clothes on and doing her hair was a part of that routine. So to support her in her independence, I let her. I don't regret this because our daughter was super proud of herself and how she looked which is more than I could ever ask for.

4. She Wanted To Wear It Out

When I asked her which style she wanted me to do, she loved to wear her hair out. Sometimes I would angrily say, “you can't do that.” Which really meant, “I didn't know how to do that.”

In an effort to show our daughter she can do and be whatever she wants in life, I sought out how to care and do a curly fro. In the midst of me learning, I made mistakes which led to her damage.

We are still learning on this hair journey. We will continue to figure out what works and does not work, so that she can proudly wear her crown the way she wants to.
